Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Do I need to enrol in a course or can I just turn up to any class, any time?
Just come whenever you like. Our classes are ongoing – we don’t run scheduled courses.

Is there anything I should tell my yoga teacher?
Be sure to tell your teacher if you have any injuries or are pregnant.

What to wear?
Light exercise clothing is fine. It should be breathable and allow freedom of movement.

What to bring?
All yoga equipment is provided. You may bring your own mat if you prefer. As far as possible come with an empty stomach (don’t eat for at least 2 hours before) – it’s better for your yoga and saves you space for the delicious good food dinner and dessert afterwards.

Monday: Beginners Hatha
The Monday session is a great beginning for your yoga journey; Gaura-arati’s smooth and spontaneous teaching style will welcome you if you are new to yoga, and solidify your ongoing practice for those more experienced. The hatha-yoga style is foundational for all yoga styles – you’ll learn the basics of breathing, the different postures (asanas) and the dynamic connection between the two. Join in with the joyful and fun mood of the Monday yoga class!

Teacher profile: Gaura-arati
You’ll know Gaura-arati by her vibrant spirit and contagious laughter. Her classes are really fun. Gaura-arati has been practicing yoga throughout New Zealand since the age of 14. She’s a full time volunteer at Gaura Yoga trained in hatha yoga (beginner’s style yoga). She also enjoys the ancient yoga practice of kirtan (meditation on mantras in the ancient Sanskrit language) which she weaves through her classes leaving you feeling totally revived, tingling from head to toe and eager for more.

Tuesday: Super Challenge

Super challenge Tuesday with Shyam-gauri is the hot appointment in every hardcore yogi’s diary.

Suitable for those with some preliminary yoga experience and those who want a big challenge!

Teacher profile: Shyam-gauri
Shyam-gauri takes inspiration for her classes from the art of theatre movement and ashtanga-vinyasa yoga (a free-flowing adventure into strength, sweat, flexibility and edge exploration). She’s funny too and loves hanging out with all our beloved yogi guests at dinner after the action. Shyam was born in the exotic tribal village of the Zulu people in South Africa. She has been whipping us into shape for about four years at Gaura Yoga. She also teaches at various workplaces around the city with “Yoga @ Work” (please ask her for more details, if you would like to arrange for yoga classes at your workplace).

Wednesday: Beginners Hatha
Radha Prasad’s Wednesday class is open to beginners and the more experienced: all will experience a deep stretch and tension release through synchronising breath and movement in the flow of postures. A balanced workout with an essential element of relaxation, you’ll leave feeling fitter, healthier and stress-free.

Teacher profile: Radha Prasad
Radha Prasad’s yoga classes are skillfully presented. Her thorough and soothing instructions create the perfect yoga experience to develop your personal practice. Radha (as she is known to her students) will teach you the essential steps of each pose, assisting you on your journey into the art of yoga. She is an optical technician by trade, who seriously loves yoga and has a solid personal practice.

Thursday: Challenge
Charge the body and chill the mind with Thursday’s new action packed ashtanga class. Let Gopesvari, Gaura Yoga’s most recent addition, boldy lead you through this ancient practice. Shake off the mind’s demands for 75 mins and allow yourself to be drawn to depths you didn’t know you had the ability to reach. Suitable for first timers to old timers, you’ll feel the benefits after just one session and learn tips you can take from the mat into everyday life.

Teacher profile: Gopesvari

Gopesh-vari joins us from Gaura Yoga’s sister center in Auckland, The Loft. She draws on many years of teaching experience following the completion of her apprenticeship at Auckland’s Yoga Acadamy. Specialising in the ashtanga asana, Gopesvari was also invited to complete a traineeship in restorative yoga, as well being offered a position teaching at the Acadamy. She willingly shares her knowledge with anybody interested in this dynamic and powerful yoga practice.
